⸮ꜣsb?: Following Kitchen’s collation of the text (KRI V, 417.1), I very tentatively read sb (ꜣsb) ‘brightness’ here (for associations of panthers and brightness see A. McDonald, Animal metaphor in the Egyptian determinative system, unpublished PhD Oxford 2002, 273; A. McDonald, Panther, panther, burning (not so) bright… The impact of iconicity on sign identity, evolution and obsolescence in the Pyramid Texts, in: J. Cervelló Autuori and M. Orriols-Llonch (eds), Signs, language and culture: the semograms of the Pyramid Texts between iconicity and referential reality, Leiden: Brill (forthcoming)), perhaps referring to the inlaid eyes of a cult statue. Kitchen’s reading of hieroglyph F9 𓄇 is, however, not given in Borchardt (Statuen und Statuetten, IV, Berlin 1934, 116), so could be considered dubious. The arm sign preceding s is not generally attested in writings of ꜣsb/sb. It could be a determinative for the preceding word, although the sign groupings in the text do not tend to interlock signs from different words.
