Commentaire sur la datation:

  • Ipuy is a common name in the village of Deir el-Medina and does not help to narrow down the date: Satzinger (1985, 254) suggests he might be the owner of TT217, dating to the reign of Ramesses II.

Description

  • The stela is inscribed on both front and rear surfaces with a hymn to Hathor which includes the narration of the individual’s encounter with the goddess in a dream. The narrative motif of a divinely inspired dream, which is first attested in eighteenth dynasty royal inscriptions (Szpakowska 2003, 47–52), is also known from another Ramessid biography in the tomb of Djehutyemheb (KRI VII, 153, 6–154, 7; Assmann 1978; 1999). The dream episode is inscribed in the lower register on the front, beneath a fragmentary raised relief scene of Ipuy kneeling before Hathor. Only the feet of the goddess, the pillar of her shrine, the offering table, and Ipuy’s front foot and the corner of his kilt are visible. He is depicted again in the lower register in sunk relief, kneeling and adoring to the right of the inscription. The continuation of the hymn fills the back of the stela. At least 4 columns are lost.
